Introspective songs that reflect an emotional panorama of inner disorientation—navigating between seas of sensitive reverb guitars, beat-heavy indie, and frustrated sonic power—can be found on the 2024 second album by the Hunsrück-based quartet Sperling, titled “Menschen wie mir verzeiht man die Welt oder hasst sie.” While their debut album “Zweifel” was initially dominated by social criticism and an outward gaze, the word “I” is now heard far more often than “you.” Sperling haven’t stopped talking about the horrors of the world. But their new songs recognize that self-awareness is now more essential. “Most birds migrate to warmer climes for the winter. The sparrow stays and endures until it gets warmer again”—that seems to be the motto of the band, which takes its name from the house sparrow and blends eloquent lyrics—sometimes sad and melancholic, sometimes defiant and angry—with atmospheric instrumentals. The music magazine Fuze credits Sperling’s songs with offering “hope in times of hopelessness.” That’s something we could truly use.
