In a world slowly heading toward the abyss, a world torn apart by hatred and oppression, many seek solace in money, drugs, and selfies. The emerging middle class is resigned and apolitical; the punks have grown old and have lost their anger. While many of the new generation think only of their own goals, such as a career and a nuclear family, there is one who speaks out for what is: Nikra is the symbol of a movement that can’t sleep, skipped school on Fridays, lives diversity, whose anger isn’t understood, and that cries out for a future. The Mannheim band Nikra makes music for the playlist generation, whose raw sound is so loud that cell phone speakers explode. Nikra sees itself as the voice of rebellion and the thunder to the rainbow. The four members met while studying at the Popakademie in Mannheim. The quartet, which identifies as a political and queer band, brings with it the distinctly rock-driven debut album “Über beide Ohren,” a record that impresses not only musically but also with powerful lyrics and political statements.
