The German-French-Polish band cultivates its own style between global music and vocal jazz, proving that handmade, acoustic music can be not only delicate, contemplative, and colorful, but also highly energetic and powerful—even without drums. The multilingual French singer Marion Lenfant-Preus and the Polish guitarist Alexander “Sobo” Sobocinski have been pursuing the idea of making music without labels and for a cross-generational and cross-cultural audience for over 15 years. Their foundation is the jazz manouche of Django Reinhardt, which, of course, comes across as absolutely contemporary with Marion & Sobo Band. “Bringing the sound of Django Reinhardt into the 21st century is something the Marion & Sobo Band accomplishes effortlessly on their third album, ‘Gomera.’ While the famous Gypsy Swing is their foundation, you never get the impression that you’re listening to music from the past,” wrote the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung about the band’s latest album.
