Balkan, Klezmer, Americana and Swing Noir – the Black Sea Shipping Company brings light cargo to the festival by the lake. It can sound calm and enigmatic, then rough and stirring – or as exuberant as nights spent dancing the night away in the harbour pub. For five years now, Karlsruhe’s Black Sea Shipping Company has been setting sail for deep waters, with the wind blowing in the direction of ska and folk-punk, ragtime, a touch of vaudeville and dark blues. It’s all energetic, virtuosic, colourful and danceable, featuring many original songs and lyrics in a mix of Yiddish, Russian, Romani, English and Italian.
